From a Homemade Recipe to an American Staple: Ranch Dressing

The Story of Steve Henson and Ranch Dressing

Some of the most iconic foods begin in the simplest ways—right in the kitchen.

In the early 1950s, Steve Henson, a plumber turned entrepreneur, created a creamy dressing made with herbs, spices, and buttermilk while working in Alaska. What started as a way to add flavor to meals quickly became a favorite among friends and guests. When Henson later purchased a ranch in California, he began serving the dressing there—calling it Hidden Valley Ranch.

The response was immediate. Guests loved it so much that they asked to take it home, leading Henson to sell seasoning packets so people could recreate the dressing in their own kitchens. By the 1970s, Hidden Valley Ranch had grown into a nationwide sensation, eventually becoming one of the most popular dressings in America.

Ranch dressing’s rise reflects something we believe deeply at Grandma’s Country Kitchen: food connects people. A good recipe doesn’t just add flavor—it creates familiarity, comfort, and tradition. Over time, ranch dressing became more than a condiment. It became a staple at family dinners, cookouts, and gatherings across generations.

Honoring food history means celebrating the creativity behind everyday favorites. From a homemade recipe to an American classic, Steve Henson’s story reminds us that some of the most lasting food traditions start with one good idea—and a love for feeding people well.

Because behind every staple is a story worth telling.
